Tsunami Assistance
We adults have a responsibility to help our children understand the world and the events that shape it. Yes, even hard and horrific tragedies such as the tsunamis. As the stories and images emerge from southern Asia, we are brought closer to the human side of this natural disaster.
Families torn apart, houses demolished, entire villages wiped out, no food, water, sanitation or medicine. As educators this is an opportunity to teach our students about geography, other cultures, basic human needs, and our role as global citizens. I encourage parents to have the same sort of conversations. It is important that the children see the adults in their lives model compassion, global awareness and involvement. This is an opportunity for us all to translate current events into action and come together as human beings in support of those less fortunate.
National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) has made a plea to all member schools to get involved. They have set up a special account for contributions from independent schools that will go directly to the American Red Cross which will be devoted to immediate relief efforts. They are working to set up a similar account with UNICEF. Important conversations are happening throughout the school as the teachers frame this tragedy in developmentally appropriate ways for their students.
We are putting our heads together with students to make sure that we are providing the time and support they need to process the tragedy and help them see themselves as people who can make a difference. Not surprisingly, the children at SRV are especially compassionate group. They are eager to make a significant and thoughtful contribution to relief efforts. Planning meetings are underway with students and staff to put together a plan for SRV's response to the tsunami tragedy. We will keep you posted as the plans develop.
