First Day 04

Welcome to the new school year
and our 75th anniversary.

What a smooth and joyous beginning it has been. The children jumped, skipped and ran off their buses and out of their cars to greet the new year. A little bit of rain did not dampen anyone’s spirits. It was terrific to listen to summer stories, watch the children reconnect with their friends and teachers, and to see how many inches were grown and teeth lost over the summer. So much can happen in a just a few short months.

While students were vacationing, the staff remained in high gear planning for the year. (Yes, educators try to strike a balance of spending time with their families, resting and recharging their batteries, but children and school are never far from our thoughts.)

Rediscovering the campus and all its treasures.

Professional development, planning for our theme “Expeditions,” and putting the finishing touches on the symposium remained on everyone’s plates. The teachers went to summer school to think more deeply about literacy instruction, progressive practices in classroom management, learning through play, collaborative learning, diversity, curriculum design, technology integration and leadership. We met to review our social studies curriculum, develop leadership teams and brainstormed about the different resources, ideas and modes of exploring our theme.

Our 75th will be a memorable year for the school. It is an opportunity to celebrate our progressive roots and to convene a national network of schools and programs to think more deeply about progressive education in the 21st century.

We welcome your partnership in nurturing and celebrating our 75th year of providing a dynamic learning environment that respects children and honors childhood.

Singing together on the first day.
