Summer Camp Counselors
The School in Rose Valley runs a summer camp program on its 8 ½-acre wooded campus in Rose Valley, Delaware County, minutes from Media. Children ages 3 to 14 attend the camp. For campers ages 5 to 12, the day is filled with choices. We have a preschool program on the campus and a Counselor-in-Training program.
Camp runs for 7 weeks, June 21 to August 6, from 8:30 to 3:30. (There is also an optional week 8, August 9 - 13, with fewer campers and counselors.) There are 6 "innings" per day (periods lasting 45 minutes to an hour) per day. Camp will not be in session on July 4. There are three days of orientation and training, Wed. – Fri., June 16, 17 and 18. We have two pot luck suppers and variety shows for parents in the evening. We have a "camp over," overnight camping on campus at least once during the camping season. Counselors are expected to participate in these activities. Counselors also write a note to each camper in their group before camp begins. The last day of camp, we pack up the rooms and put our materials and equipment away in the storage shed. All counselors must have State Police and child molestation checks. We have the necessary paperwork for those who have not had these background checks performed.
We have specialty and general counselors as described below. (Many counselors have skills other than their specialty. We encourage them to include these other interests in their offerings to the campers. Examples of past hidden skills have been: archery, magic, photography, drumming, and singing.)
FOR ALL SPECIALTY COUNSELORS:
In addition to leading your specialty activities, you will also be responsible for a group of campers (usually between 10 and 16 children, mixed gender and grouped by age). The children are generally ages 7 to 12. You will have a home base, a classroom at the school where you will meet with your group in the mornings. You will help your campers choose their activities for the day. You will be with your group at lunch and again at the end of the day. At the end of the day, the campers should help you straighten the room, take the compost (fruit and vegetable scraps) to the compost near the garden and ready the room for the next day. You will have the assistance of a junior counselor. You will also be responsible for incorporating CITs into your activities at certain times and they will also look to you for guidance.
