Message From the Board

Welcome to a new school year.

Since the inception of SRV, parent involvement has been a cornerstone of the school. The composition of the Board of Trustees reflects this tradition. Members of the Board are all parents and former parents, several members are also alumni of the school. Additionally the Head of School and two staff members sit on the board.

The Board of Trustees is charged with ensuring the long term viability of the school with oversight of its mission, business affairs and resources.

Looking back and looking forward.

SRV is celebrating its 80th anniversary this school year. As a school we will take this opportunity to revisit our history and reconnect with those who came before us. At the same time we will be focusing on our future, as we welcome 23 new families into the SRV community and await the culmination of the search committee's efforts to identify a new Head of School.

As the Board takes steps to guide the school through this economically challenging environment we will also be looking for lessons learned from our past. As we celebrate the 80th anniversary, those of us on the Board must keep in mind that our primary focus should not be the 80th but rather the 100th anniversary. Prior Board members put in the work and made the decisions that brought this amazing school through its first 80 years. It is the responsibility of the current Board and of those of you who will follow to ensure that when the students who are out playing on the climbers today are looking for a school for their children, SRV will still be here.

Last year the Board recognized the need to strengthen the connection between the Board and the school community and began monthly articles in the FREEP. In order to make this more of a two way communication I would welcome suggestions for future topics. All Board members and their contact info will be listed in the school directory. Please contact any one of us with any questions or concerns you may have regarding the board.

One final note. During my 13 years of being a parent at the school the impact the teaching staff had on my children was amazing, obvious and easy to celebrate. I am afraid that during that same period I often took for granted the work of the administrative staff. This past summer the administrative staff faced several challenges. First the staff is about 25% smaller than it was at the start of school last year. Every staff member's role has changed and responsibilities have increased. In addition to all of the things that must be done over the summer to get the school ready for the new year the admin team was thrown a few extra challenges this summer; finishing the PAIS report, rewriting employee policies, developing an influenza response plan, ever shifting enrollment numbers and budgetary issues, as well as a complete reorganization and redesign of the business office. I appreciate how much they accomplished and am inspired by the grace, good humor and dedication to the school with which they faced every new challenge.
