Mini Courses

The Board of Trustees is the caretaker of The School in Rose Valley. The Board is entrusted with managing the business affairs of the School, the stewardship of its resources and the oversight of its mission. With its founding by parents in 1929, SRV began a tradition of intense involvement of parents in the education of their young children. The Board reflects this tradition of parent involvement. The membership of the Board includes the Head of School, two staff representatives selected by the staff and 12 to 18 other members. At least seven of the Board members are parents of current students and at least two members must not have served on the preceding Board. Board members serve without pay.

Members are elected for overlapping three-year terms. The Committee on Trustees (COT) prepares a slate of prospective Board members for the spring election. This process is thorough and ongoing; those wishing to suggest a community member for the COT's consideration as a prospective trustee should submit these suggestions to the committee as early as possible – a year in advance is not too soon. Ballots containing the Board's slate of all nominated members are circulated to parents, Board and staff in the spring for election.

The Board's primary responsibilities include:

  1. Hiring and evaluating the Head of School. The Head is the only School employee hired and evaluated by the Board; all other employees of the School are hired and supervised by the Head. Decisions relating to curriculum and the daily running of the school are made by the Head rather than the Board.
  2. Keeping the School true to its mission.
  3. Turtle
  4. The stewardship of the School's resources, which includes setting tuition and adoption of the annual budget.
  5. Planning for the maintenance, renovation and development of the facilities and grounds.
  6. Overseeing fundraising and development efforts.
  7. Overseeing all Board Committee activities.

Parents may bring a question or concern to the attention of the Board in several ways. You can talk to a Board member. You can address a letter to the Board President or contact the Board President and ask to address the Board at a monthly meeting. The Board gives careful consideration to each comment it receives.

Board and School Committees

Most of the committees at SRV are chaired by members of the Board or staff. Generally speaking, any parent or community member interested in helping or being a member of a committee is not only welcome, but encouraged to participate on School committees. Through this type of participation and involvement by parents, connections are made and a thriving community is formed. Parents may contact the Board Secretary or the office if interested in volunteering to serve on a committee. Parents are welcomed to serve on the following committees:

  • Development Committee: Responsible for all non-tuition-based fundraising at SRV, including the planning and carrying-out of fundraising events.
  • Campus Planning Committee: Responsible for envisioning and planning sustainable buildings and grounds to support SRV's long-term goals. This year, the committee is going to be establishing a new campus master plan, mapping out the facilities that SRV will need as it moves into the future.
  • Technology Committee: This committee is being re-established to help create a strategic plan for technology investment and implementation at SRV. The Technology Committee will address questions relating to the kinds of technology we need on our campus, and what role they will play in the program and administration of the school.
  • Finance Committee: Responsible for understanding and managing the finances of the institution along with advising the board and administration on the state of the finances, loans, and investments of the school.
  • Diversity Committee: Responsible for supporting the board and administration in reaching our stated institutional goals of increasing and sustaining our community's diversity.

Other committees are created on ad hoc basis and parents are invited to participate on those as well.
