Mission

The School in Rose Valley is a progressive school for children in preschool through sixth grade. In our classrooms and our wooded campus, teachers and students create experiences that arouse curiosity, stretch muscles, strengthen initiative, and stimulate questions. We guide children to know themselves, to delight in learning, and to understand their opportunities and responsibilities in our community and the world.

Enrollment

Approximately 130 boys and girls from a 20-mile radius. Children who attend the school come from many school districts including: Rose-Tree Media, Wallingford-Swarthmore, Radnor, Great Valley, Upper Darby, Lower Merion, Haverford, Chester-Upland, Ridley, Philadelphia, Tredyffrin-Easttown and West Chester.

Class Size

Teacher-student ratio is approximately 1:8. Optimal class size is 16 with one teacher. Because we have specialist teachers in Technology, Music, Art, Sports, Science, Woodshop and Library, students often go to their specials subjects classes in half groups or thirds. For example, in 3 and 5 day preschool, 8 or 9 students go to Woodshop with the Woodshop teacher and a preschool teacher, while the other 8 or 9 remain in the classroom for a small group project with another preschool teacher. In Kindergarten, 7 students may attend a literacy lesson with one lead Kindergarten teacher, 7 may make play dough with another lead Kindergarten teacher, and 7 may attend Technology with our Technology Specialist.

Hours

School hours are 8:15 to 3:00. Preschool half-day children leave at 11:45. Children may arrive in classrooms at 8:10 and leave between 3:00 and 3:15. (Teachers are always here before and after those times, working in classrooms, preparing lessons, arranging provisions and displays, conferring with one another.) Please adhere to school hours with the leeway on either side as described above.

Busing

In most local school districts for most elementary grades there is public busing beginning in kindergarten. It has been the practice of SRV to take responsibility for children bused here at whatever hour those children arrive. Children should be told to go to the pre-day room if they arrive before 8:10. There is no charge for children in pre-day who arrive early on school district buses.

Our school receptionist will help you to arrange for busing to SRV. However, in order to receive pick up locations and schedules, you will need to contact the Transportation Office of your local school district.

Food/Lunch Policy

The School in Rose Valley community is aware of how much good health and proper nutrition can contribute to a child's well-being and ability to learn. Therefore, we are committed to serving nutritionally balanced meals. We strive to use a limited amount of processed foods, especially those containing white flour, salt and sugar. We buy locally and use organic products whenever possible. The meals prepared are well balanced Type A School Lunches, which are usually 3/5 vegetarian and 2/5 fish or meat weekly. A vegetarian alternative is available on fish or meat days. We cook from scratch as much as possible, and provide fresh vegetables and milk daily.

Snacks are provided by the school and typically include things like raisins, sesame sticks, cut and whole fruit, and sometimes pretzels and whole grain crackers.

Our intention is to provide menus with optimum appeal, variety and nourishment.
